Trophy to be handed out in outdoor lighting competition

Every Christmas, many people around the UK make an effort to get into the festive spirit by putting up decorations, as well as new home lighting and outdoor lighting in their gardens.

Usually, this is simply done to enhance the sense of Yule-tide cheer, but in Yeovil there is a competitive edge to such activity.

According to the Yeovil Express, each year the town runs a competition to acknowledge the efforts made by people to brighten up their neighbourhoods with their home lighting and outdoor lighting.

All entries were registered before December 20th and the winners will be announced this month.

Commenting on the efforts people go to, Yeovil mayor Phil Chandler, who has been helping with the judging, said: "People make special efforts to brighten up their neighbourhood and bring extra sparkle to Christmas time by taking the time and trouble to create an individual lighting display.

"Every year more and more people are decorating their homes and we would like to recognise all the hard work and expense involved by awarding a trophy to the organisers of the best display."

The winner of the contest will receive a cup that has been donated by former town councillor Audrey Bartlett.

Of course it is not only homes and gardens that get the festive treatment during the period around December 25th. Towns and cities across the country also have lighting displays and decorations designed to get people into the party spirit.

Not only this, but many areas have special Christmas themed areas with ice rinks, big wheels and special market stalls selling food, drink and various other items.

However, as the UK moves into the new year, many of these will have already been removed and they will not be used again for another 11 months until the new Christmas season gets underway at the end of the year.
